Chasing Light. An Exhibition of New Works by William Morrison
<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Halifax-based William Morrison has become a well-loved regular exhibitor at the gallery and we thought it time to give him a solo show.<\/p>\n

A very talented Halifax-based artist who seems to be known as much overseas as here. He\u2019s a man of few words, and those expressed in the strong accent of Glasgow, the city he left 40 years ago. No pretentious patter from him to explain the meaning of his work When pushed for a written comment he quips that \u201cThe p\"\"<\/a>en is not my forte, that\u2019s why I use a brush\u201d. Pushed a little further he reveals initially that his latest works, completed for this exhibition, focus on the Yorkshire landscape, from land to coast. Then opening up slightly \u201cI have tried to capture the light that illuminates the land at different times of the day and seasons. The paintings are mostly semi-abstract-\u00a0 I do start a work from sketches and photographs that I have taken, after which I don’t really look at them again, but play with the image in my mind. This gives not a true image, but a memory of the place converted into light chased\u2026.and caught on canvas.\u201d<\/p>\n

His oils and acrylics can be coloured delicately, as if by the first light of dawn or with a sumptuous richness which defies nature. Each one conveys an atmosphere, be it serenity or apocalyptic\u2026. or sometimes both. But these are William\u2019s interpretations of real places, The stone buttressing of Barden Tower or Richmond Castle emerges from foliage or mist. William\u2019s process of painting is a fully immersive one, on checking progress I was told he had not had a chance to get out for a pint for the last week. Who says that artists no longer suffer for their art! \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The Gallery will be launching its traditional Christmas show on Tuesday 16th Nov (7-9pm) which will then open ever day until Christmas Eve. It is always something a bit special; a chance for regular exhibitors to prepare new work, the past year\u2019s soloists to return with potential Christmas offerings and to give space to new artists who have caught the eye during the year. The front exhibition space in the gallery may have as many as 20 artists work on show. There is always a little uncertainty as to what turns up on installation day, but an eclectic mix can be expected, with no themes, no tonal co-ordination- and a huge range of media- a true Christmas Variety Show, with something to suit all tastes. With concerns over the global supply chain in the run up to Christmas, it is good to know that locally produced goods are still available, with the additional benefits of minimal, transport-related, carbon emissions, support for local producers, and the survival of independent retailers. The Bingley Gallery, has been based on Park Road, Bingley for the past 15 years, originally under the ownership of Jane Fielder and more recently by David Starley.
