Judith Levin<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Best known for her gorgeously evocative heathery moorland scenes, this solo show additionally includes a wider selection of subject matter.\u00a0 A real treat for the senses.<\/h3>\n

No artist represents the atmospheric grandeur of our region\u2019s upland moors with the same poignancy as Judith Levin. According to Judith, the roots of her artistic inspiration trace back to an early childhood encounter; at approximately five years old, while riding in her mother\u2019s car, she was deeply struck by the vivid hues of the surrounding heather-covered moorland\u2014an unfamiliar and somewhat daunting landscape. She recalls fearing that closing her eyes might cause this striking vision to vanish forever. This formative memory has continued to shape her work, imbuing each painting\u2014whether featuring the Cow and Calf, Haworth Moor, or an unnamed moorland stream\u2014with a profound emotional resonance that connects the viewer to the environment. Judith’s paintings frequently capture moments when sunlight breaks through mist or low cloud, infusing the scene with warmth and optimism.<\/h4>\n

In addition to landscapes, Judith Levin demonstrates versatility by working across a range of subjects, notably still lifes. Her floral arrangements are rendered with subtlety, intentionally avoiding rigid symmetry, while fallen petals evoke the transient nature of beauty. Across both genres, nostalgia for early impressions is evident throughout her oeuvre.<\/h4>\n

A notable development in Levin\u2019s latest works concerns scale. Previously, she created large-scale pieces in her north Leeds studio, situated in a historic mansion. The space, although in decline, offered ample room and lighting suitable for expansive canvases\u2014often requiring special transportation. Now, residing in more comfortable accommodation, Levin\u2019s works are generally smaller in size, though they retain their distinctive charm.<\/h4>\n

The exhibition is accompanied by a selection of 3D work including new ceramics by Kath Bonson, Turned wood by John Douglas and combinations of woos and ceramics\u00a0 by Nadine Blakemore and John Douglas<\/h4>\n

The Gallery will be launching its traditional Christmas show on Tuesday 16th Nov (7-9pm) which will then open ever day until Christmas Eve. It is always something a bit special; a chance for regular exhibitors to prepare new work, the past year\u2019s soloists to return with potential Christmas offerings and to give space to new artists who have caught the eye during the year. The front exhibition space in the gallery may have as many as 20 artists work on show. There is always a little uncertainty as to what turns up on installation day, but an eclectic mix can be expected, with no themes, no tonal co-ordination- and a huge range of media- a true Christmas Variety Show, with something to suit all tastes. With concerns over the global supply chain in the run up to Christmas, it is good to know that locally produced goods are still available, with the additional benefits of minimal, transport-related, carbon emissions, support for local producers, and the survival of independent retailers. The Bingley Gallery, has been based on Park Road, Bingley for the past 15 years, originally under the ownership of Jane Fielder and more recently by David Starley.
