Lis Holt: Ceramics and jewellery
About the Artist
Lis studied multi-disciplinarily design (ceramics) at North Staffordshire Polytechnic in Stoke-on-Trent and is now based in Riddlesden.
Lis uses ‘T’ material to make sculptural forms, coiled vessels, slabbed boxes and a range of ceramic jewellery. Her sculptural pieces aim to reflect the dynamics of the natural environment. The beauty of the natural world holds a particularly strong fascination for her and animates her work; especially aspects of the sea and of birds and other wildlife. Further inspiration springs from an appreciation of the inherent properties of clay and glaze materials and a great admiration for ancient ceramic forms.
Once dry, the work is bisque fired and a dry-barium or copper glaze is applied. Metal oxides and wax resist are also used to enhance the forms. The completed pieces are glaze fired, sometimes several times, to stoneware temperatures of 1280°C or 1240°C.
