Joseph Pighills (1901-84) Watercolour & Oil Painter, Oxenhope

About the Artist

Joseph Pighills (1902-84)

Joe was born and lived his whole life in Marsh near Oxenhope, West Yorkshire. Attending evening classes at Keighley College of Art, he developed his natural talent, built a considerable reputation as a ‘painter’s painter’ and  found commercial success in his later years. Best known for his stormy views of the moorland near his home. A recent publication: ‘Faith and Art; The Life and Work of Joseph Pighills’ by Colin Neville provides an insight to his life and art. When his son, John, visited the Gallery he recalled going out with his father in stormy weather (you rarely see blue skies in his work) to protect the in-progress painting with an umbrella!
