Tom Durkin (1928-1990)
Born in Bingley, Durkin was a contemporary of Hockney at the Bradford School of Art in the 1950s and married fellow art student Jacqueline Stirling. After graduation, Tom taught art for a while in Bradford before opening a gift shop in Grassington. Later moving to Haworth, the couple opened a studio and gallery on the Main Street selling his own work amongst others.
Early work includes abstracts and he went on to paint more gentile Edwardian scenes, but boldly depicted landscapes of the area around Haworth remain central to his output. He exhibited widely including the Royal Academy in London and Northern Academy in Manchester.
